Category: Artist
Joy Hester was a contemporary of Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd and her husband, Albert Tucker. Her preferred medium was not painting, however, but drawing. She also has a close association with John and Sunday Reed, of Heide.
She married Tucker in 1941 , by whom she had a son, Sweeney. She separated from Tucker in 1947 and moved to Sydney with Gray Smith, whom she married in 1959, and by whom she had two children. Her most famous works are the "Faces" (1947-8) and "The Lovers" (1956) series. In 1947, she contracted Hodgkin's Disease, to which she succumbed in 1960.
