This website provides resources for staff and library managers about the benefits of and issues to consider with secondments.

Secondments are temporary assignments in different positions. They are usually for periods of between three and twelve months.

Secondments can take a number of forms. It may involve moving temporarily to:

  • Another job within your own library.
  • A job in a different branch of your library service.
  • A job within your local government area but outside the library.
  • A job at a different library.
  • A job in a different country.

The secondment may be:

  • To a position that becomes available and is offered without interview.
  • Via an interview process for an advertised temporary assignment.
  • Via a direct exchange between two staff.

Secondments offer a range of benefits and can be a very positive development opportunity for individual staff that also offers positive outcomes to the host and home libraries. There are also issues that need to be considered by all parties involved when making decisions about secondments. This website is designed to help libraries and individuals to make those decisions.
